I am a big fan of Bill Bryson's travel books. He is sympathetic and has tones of humour, which he applies to daily life. Also, he writes in such a way that makes boring uneventful stuff look interesting.
This time he visits Australia several times. He has some friends who invite him over, but mostly makes the trip on his own. He visits the typical places, but he avoids the most crammed locations one way of another - he ends up spending most of his time crisscossing the desert, trying not to get too bored and not to kill anybody with his awful driving skills. I found touching the part about the Aboriginal people's situation, especially when he explains about the radio school.
