A teenage boy is fascinated by a woman old enough to be his mother. When he encounters her again years later, he realizes something horrifying about her past. Furthermore, he finds that she is willing to be punished for a crime rather than admit to something which embarrasses her more.

I thought the book brought up some interesting issues, but also think that it would have more impact on someone in Germany, Austria, or Poland. The author has perhaps too much trust in the ennobling quality of literature
