Over the last few years, the news has been filled with stories about the struggles of individuals who have gender identities that don't conform to the traditional conventions. The issues surrounding transgender rights have become politically fraught, and many people simply seem unable to grasp the concept that gender identity can possibly NOT match a person's anatomical gender.

Fro those who struggle to understand transgender issues, where a person's gender identity is the opposite of their anatomical gender, the very idea of a non-binary gender identity is probably all but unthinkable. And yet, this book is evidence that, for some people, this is exactly the case. A bi-gender individual is someone who does not identify as either entirely male or entirely female. And for those who don't understand gender identity, it probably appears to be some form of weird perversion.

This memoir sheds some light onto these issues. For those of us who are cis-gendered, it takes us inside the life of a bi-gender individual as s/he struggles to understand and accept this reality and come to terms with the impact it has on his/her life. As the subtitle clearly indicates, this is a very candid account, which means that it strays into areas that many might consider to be TMI. However, for the reader who brings an open mind, it is an enlightening journey into a very different lived experience. While it may not answer every question, it does provide a powerful account about what it is like to have a non-binary gender identity, which can provide tools for others to accept and support these people. And for others who quietly struggle with their own gender identity issues, this book should provide acknowledgement and comfort in knowing that they are not alone.

For anyone who wants a better understanding of the issues faced by those who do not conform to traditional gender identities, this book should be on their reading list, so that we can have a constructive and positive conversation about the realities faced by this segment of our population.

As someone who identifies as genderqueer to some extent, I've been fascinated by stories and memoirs about others who are non-binary. Everyone's experiences and feelings are unique, so I definitely look forward to learning about James-Beth's struggles, epiphanies, and path of self-discovery! Thanks for giving me a chance to read this!
