"HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics.
`One by one they were all becoming shades. Better pass boldly into that other world, in the full glory of some passion, than fade and wither dismally with age.'
Revealing the truths and realities about Irish society in the early 20th century, Joyce's Dubliners challenged the prevailing image of Dublin at the time. A group portrait made up of 15 short stories about the inhabitants of Joyce's native city, he offers a subtle critique of his own town, imbuing the text with an underlying tone of tragedy. Through his various characters he displays the complicated relationships, hardships and mundane details of everyday life and the desire for escape - a yearning that so closely mirrored his own experiences. "

"Dubliners" is a collection of short stories which are not even complete stories or portraits of a character, but rather snippets of everyday life, depictions of people and situations from Dublin on the end of 19th/very early 20th century. I admit this kind of book isn't everyone's cup of tea while me my self might had a different reaction if this was written by an other author, concerning an other place and time.
But personally I like the feeling of James Joyce's language, I have a soft spot for Irish authors of this era and I've a quite decent knowledge of the history of the area, so I think I can place those stories in context which helps a lot.
I've read The Dubliners many times during the years and one copy of the book stays in my permanent collection.
I bought this second copy for Book Crossing purposes and I hope future readers will enjoy it too.
Let me know what you make of the book!
