The Lies of Locke Lamora

Generally well written adventure fantasy novel. The constructed world is well fleshed out, and the plot is mostly fast-paced and exciting. What I didn't appreciate at all, though, is the role of women here. This is a fantasy world, surely this can have women in charge of more than their own brothels? It's so lame to see authors not being able to think outside this box even when the objectification and disenfranchisement of females doesn't serve any part or objective in the plot. It's the 21st century, and I frankly expect better of authors at this point.
