Wasn't too sure I'd enjoy this when I started reading it, but glad I persisted as it's a very good read!!! Central characters are Russians Yelena, her two friends, and parents who are joined by an intriguing Bulgarian wishing to join the war between Austria and the Turkish...... into which Yelena is drawn. Sad and mysterious ending......

Translated by Michael Pursglove

Blurb:
"Yelena, the young, headstrong daughter of upper-class Russian parents, has various suitors, including the romantic sculptor Shubin and the earnest scholar Bersenev, but finds herself drawn to Insarov, a Bulgarian student with revolutionary tendencies and a desire to return to homeland. This fateful attraction incurs the wrath and disapproval of her family and sets in motion a series of events which challenge notions of love, rebellion and idealism.
A highly controversial work upon its original publication. Ivan Turgenev's On the Eve is now recognized as one of the masterpieces of Russian literature and an essential document of the upheaval that dominated Russian society in the years prior to the Crimean War. Turgenev's restrained, nuanced prose is rendered beautifully in Michael Pursglove's new translation."

Many thanks to gaboyd also for this second book - I'm looking forward to reading this! :)
