Clearly with that much back story detail on the reverse cover you are aided if reading this on its own or out of sequence. I expect all the other VAMPIRE ACADEMY novels will be in this high drama vein but equally entertaining once one is drawn in. I have a vague memory of reading one of these series before though it could simply be that I am way too familiar with many of the elements present and found in other Young Adult Fantasy series? (Oops, guilty pleasure read’s anyone?)

OK these elements ably illustrated here are – adherence to a code of loyalty; introduction of doubt; shattering of resolves; impossibly fraught choices; the tortured betrayal of trust; ambiguities abound as if just to totally confound everyone, bad guys revealed as capable of good things and the reverse; and of course the eternal favourites, the added spice of forbidden and dangerous liaisons; the devastation of utterly heart rending loss; and finally to turn up the heat the imposition of fiendish time pressures! All to be found displayed in series these like; the MORGANVILLE VAMPIRES series by Rachel Caine THE HOUSE OF NIGHT series by Kristin Cast and P C Cast; CHICAGOLAND VAMPIRES SERIES by Chloe Neill and also the WERECATS series by Rachel Vincent I’m sure this novel of the VAMPIRE ACADEMY series fits into this universe.

“They why do it at all?”
“Because we don’t always know what it is we’re thinking or feeling. When you have a guide, it’s easier to figure things out. You’ll often discover that you already know what to do. I can help you ask questions and go places you might not have on your own.”
“Well you’re good at the question part,” I noted dryly.
“While I don’t have any ‘awesome advice’ I do have some things I want you to think about for when we talk again.” She glanced down at her note pad and tapped it with her pencil while she thought. “First, I want you to think again about what I asked about Lissa – how you really feel about dedicating your life to her.”
“I already told you.”
“I know. Just think about it some more. If you answer’s the same, that’s fine. Then, I want you to consider something else. I want you to think about whether maybe the reason you’re attracted to this unavailable guy is because he’s unavailable.”
