trade-size paperback.

from the back cover:
At the age of twenty-six, Maarten Troost - who had been pushing the snooze button on the alarm clock of life by racking up useless graduate degrees and muddling through a series of temp jobs - decided to pack up his flip-flops and move to Tarawa, a remote South Pacific island in the Republic of Kiribati. He was restless and lacked direction, and the idea of dropping everything and moving to the ends of the earth was irresistibly romantic. He should have known better.

Claiming this one from the Hodgepodge Diminishing bookbox.

Later: I'd hoped for more from this one - both the title and the cover-blurb about a trip gone wrong sounded quite promising as to hilarious and/or suspenseful events. But I think that the author's writing style just didn't work as well for me as some other humorous-travel writers I've enjoyed (see Bill Bryson, Tony James Slater, Redmond O'Hanlon, Tony Hawks...). Here, it often felt as if the author were trying a bit too hard to be amusing - and, in contrast, the descriptions of the really rough parts of the trip seemed more depressing to me than anything else.

Of the few spots in the book that moved me to mark them for possible quotes, the one that made me laugh out loud was this one, in the chapter headed (in the running-joke Victorian style of verbose chapter-headings) "In which the Author goes deep inside the mind of the Novelist and expounds - for the benefit of future generations - on what it takes to produce Literature, the noblest Art, to which many are called and few chosen." The entire content of that chapter: "Moving on..."

One of the other sections I marked was indeed moving - though as far from humor as is possible to get, dealing as it did with Tarawa and the history of the brutal battles there during WWII. There was also a more personal section set there, as the author debated whether to remain or to return to the world of cities and seasons and the internet; if more of the book had focused on that level of thought about what it means to change one's environment and to be changed by it, I might have had a different reaction to the whole.
