I was intrigued to find a Penguin 60s version of Karen Blixen's memoir of her "farm" in Africa. I decided to pick this up and share it. The three chapters here are from her 1937 memoir OUT OF AFRICA. There is a "Penguin Classics" version of this. This edition was extracted from it to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Penguin publishers 22 years ago. Years later, this miniature book is in good shape, ready for a read. I hope it will introduce at least a reader or two to Blixen or Isak Dinesen's beautiful writing.

My favorite chapter here was the first, "The Ngong Farm." Blixen's writing is most beautiful in its description of this distant place she came to know. She's writing of it after leaving to return to her native Denmark. Reading, I felt I was there in the Ngong Hills. Her chapters "A Native Child" and "Wings" were more about her but still compelling, very well-written and interesting. This seemed like a good read for International Woman's Day. Karen Blixen, whose pen name was Isak Dinesen, was certainly an international and adventurous woman. I have a copy of OUT OF AFRICA that I'll have to re-read sometime this year. In 1985, this story was popularized in the movie of the same name with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. The musical score was beautiful and the scenes of the two flying over Africa in Denys Finch-Hatton's airplane were my favorites in that version.

Thank you so much for thinking of me with this little book. Since I will be stuck at home for the next three months, it is good to have lots of little books to read. I prefer the short reads these days as I spend most of my time painting rocks and stones as a kindness project, so the little books fit in nicely with my breaks from painting. I'm stuck at home due to this terrible Corona Virus Pandemic. I am in three of the high risk groups so I am safer at home than outside mixing with others.

Hallo daar, gelukkige vinder!
