Back cover:
Paul West arrives in Paris to start a new job - and finds out what the French are really like.
They do eat a lot of cheese, some of which smells like pigs' droppings. They don't wash their armpits with garlic soap. Going on strike really is the second national participation sport after pétanque. And, yes, they do use suppositories.
Less quaint than A Year in Provence, less chocolatey than Chocolat, A Year in the Merde tells you how to get served by the grumpiest Parisian waiter; how to make amour - not war; and how not to buy a house in the French countryside.

I read it a while ago, when I was living in England. It made me laugh so hard because this book is filled with realities and humor.

This book is really witty. The writer has a great turn of phrase and excellent description, so you can really envision what and who is being described. This feels almost like reading someone's journal, because it's that believable. Really enjoyable read.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I have a plan for this so thanks - eartharoleanne - for bringing it to Old Gang Meetup, Sun 12 Aug for me!

Apologies for my delay in making a ‘caught’ journal entry here is one at last… combined with a ‘release note’ as this is soon to be wrapped up into a parcel heading down south.

Made a bid for this as I thought it might possibly interest my brother-in-law, he of a fondness of all things French! Made a meandering foray into it myself and was intrigued and surprised, by the descriptions of French working life in all its different tones from the English business approach and as there was a wry self-depreciating humour demonstrated by the author amusement was also a key note. Hoping bil will agree, thanks again earthcaroleanne!

UPDATE - WED 29 AUG 2018: HELLO DEAR ENGLISH BIL, I snagged this for you from BC chum, scanned it briefly at high speed so can say it’s a hoot! Organisational hic-cups meant alterations to my posting schedule because in the end the total number of late BIRTHDAY BOOKCROSSING parcels for you [each under 2 kg’s in weight] totalled five!!!!! GOOD GRIEF! All entered the Postal system last thing today and will be picked up and processed for you on Thursday 30 August.

Arrived in Somerset as part of Mr Flutterbies9's bumper birthday set of packages.

This was one of the few books which TC had been aware of previously but he has not read it. However, with tbr having just been added to in spectacular fashion, I'm not sure how long he will take to get around to it!

In fact, Mr Flutterbies9 read this so quickly I missed it!. When I asked him how he found it, around Christmas, so that I could journal it, he had forgotten so he quickly read it over again! Obviously, this was a fairly quick and easy read. he recalled that he enjoyed it but also did not retain it.

I have since read this book and I can see why it was so quick and easy to read as I whizzed through it in two days (or rather two nights!). Frankly, I thought that Cyr11 summed this book up rather neatly in the very first entry. I also agree with rainbow3 that "a wry self-depreciating humour" is amply "demonstrated by the author" which added to the general enjoyment of this tongue in cheek loo across the channel.

Now time for this book to travel onwards, and so a plan is hatched.
