The Narrow Road to the Deep North

An epic book, but very painful to read. It's the story of an Australian MD who is in a Japanese prison camp during WWII, in Thailand. He is also a senior officer for a team that starts at about 100, but dwindles as his men are subjected to horrendous deprivation, health challenges and beatings, as they work to build a railroad under impossible conditions. There are also chapters about his relationships with his mistress (his uncle's wife), his own wife and children. Many of the POW's and the Japanese officers are also painted in detail.
The book stimulates thinking about right and wrong, guilt and innocence, and especially, the horror of war.
