Beartown

Outstanding book. Just WOW. I would never have picked up a sports-themed book while browsing in a bookstore, but this one came with a strong recommendation from a respected friend.
Beartown could be any small town, though it's probably in Sweden. That doesn't matter. What's key is the town's addiction to ice hockey, and the many ways that influences the lives of its inhabitants. Yes, the book talks about hockey, but much more about the lives of the people and the ways they interact. There's very strong character development and a plot with twists and surprises. This was a book that kept me up until 3 a.m., as I had to stay with it and find out the outcome.

The kids are interesting characters of many types. The adults I found not so much. The parents remind me of our little league. I will leave the ending for you to decipher. I didn’t find it very satisfying.
