4 out of 10

This is a high farce of an unrelenting staccato rhythm. Waugh's sarcasm is biting and his dialogue is pitch perfect. Most of the novel is as light as a feather as he skewers British society just before WWI. Waugh actually ends the story on a battlefield with impending doom to remind us of real life.
