I picked this book in a remainder bin a good while ago. It languished here for at least five years. I guess I didn't want to read it, knowing the sad fate of the singer and song writer Hank Williams, who died at 29 of alcoholism and a broken heart. Yet when I finally ventured in Paul Hemphill caught me from his first chapter of hitting the road with his trucking father, listening to country music in the cab, to the last of how the story of the "lost highway" played out for Hemphill, a "son of Hank Williams' South." An untaught child of south Alabama and the tragedy of World War I, Williams became an extraordinary poet of the Southern working class. His songs still haunt and entertain 65 years after his death.
