If you're looking for a fast-paced read, don't go anywhere near this! It takes literally half the book for the action to properly start. And yet it works. The excruciatingly build up does assist massively in character and plot development and does 'make sense' within that concept I think.

Harriet is an... interesting... narrator and sometimes I desperately wished for another character's perspective as the plot developed. But it is the very claustrophobia of being trapped in her world that gives this novel its edge in the end. It is an uncomfortable and irritating experience to read, but ultimately very worthwhile.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

It's a long time since I read this (pre COVID!) but I do remember enjoying it very much. The plot kept me guessing and the background of Victorian West End Glasgow was an added bonus.

I didn't have the patience to persist with this in spite of the good reviews from previous readers. It was just taking too long to get to the point for me. It's a shame as I do remember enjoying "The Observations" by this author. Oh well, can't win them all.
