Heart of Darkness

I think I cannot read this story, too dreary. We learn about all the atrocities of white colonialists in Africa, about th exploiting of nature and humans alike, until all is devastated. It's really no fun at all.
I recall a book about a similar topic by T.C. Boyle (Water Music), and it was a feast to read, thrilling and moving, albeit it described the same ruthlessness of whites. But Boyle has humour, whereas Conrad is dead serious - and deadly boring. I wonder why he is so celebrated, I just can't warm up to this author.
