Cruel To Be Kind is the true story of Max, aged 6. He is fostered by Cathy while his mother is in hospital with complications from type 2 diabetes. Fostering Max gets off to a bad start when his mother, Caz, complains and threatens Cathy even before Max has moved in. Cathy and her family are shocked when they first meet Max. But his social worker isn’t the only one in denial; his whole family are too.

This book is about a remarkable woman who over 25 years has fostered and has been carer to more than 150 children. This story is about Max, who as a six year old had to be taken into care. His mother was very ill in hospital and his father was abusive.
Cathy did all she could for him and to change the way he had been brought up, especially with the diet. She also had to cope with his family.
This story is well worth reading, and fortunately things improve for Max who turns out to be clever at school; with Cathy's help.

The story of a morbidly obese boy who comes into foster care. The author is the foster carer and she sounds a remarkably kind lady, who is a wonderful foster carer. However I find the writing bland. I wished for that extra sparkle of emotion in the writing style. Too much description of mundane things too.
