Traplines is a collection of four short stories dealing with issues of addiction, crime, family violence and relations between First Nations communities (and individuals) and their white neighbours. The last story in this collection, Queen of the North, introduces the characters of Jimmy and Karaoke, who feature prominently in Robinson's 2000 novel Monkey Beach (as does the fishing boat after which Queen of the North is named). Similarly, the characters of Adelaine and Uncle Josh appear to be earlier versions of LisaMarie and Uncle Mick from Monkey Beach. Eden Robinson is a member of the Haisla First Nation from northwestern British Columbia. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. |
