This was picked up by my husband at the Perth meet up. It is the true story of a man who believed he should have been a woman. In 1920 he was charged with the murder of his wife.
I am taking this to the Mainz Bookcrossing Convention with a particular person in mind for this book. I hope they enjoy reading it.

This is the story of a woman, or rather transgender, Eugenia Falleni, who lived in Australia at the beginning of the 20th century. His second wife actually believed herself to be pregnant by him in 1920 when he was taken away to be charged with the murder of his first wife.

Eugenia insisted on his innocence and history will likely never know the truth, given the primitive forensic technology of those days.

It was a hard book to read, not so much because of the writing, but because I felt so sorry for Eugenia. I felt sorry for the secretive life he had to lead, with a foreboding, even without the book blurp, that it won't lead to a happy ending. Were he born a hundred years later, there may still be prejudice and discrimination, but he would have received so much more acceptance, support and even medical help, to live the life he desired. I was also infuriated with the ineffectual defense his attorney put up. For today's reader who have watched at least some courtroom drama, it's hard not to yell out "Objection!!" and feel like I myself could have done a better job representing him.

Thanks for sharing this book. It definitely is something out of my usual realm but I appreciate the opportunity to learn about the past, and this one person's life.
