This is Not My Hat
4 journalers for this copy...
The title and cover caught my eye and so I took this book from a Little Free Library in Aurora Hills in Arlington, VA.
There's a sweet note written in it:
"For Connor
on his 3rd Birthday.
Love you
Grandma
xxoo"
Later:
OMG! Did he get eaten!?
The big fish’s eye expressions made me laugh!
Reading over the reviews on Goodreads, people reacted rather strongly to this story. They either loved it or hated. One thing I found interesting was that many people didn't think it was appropriate for children. But some people, teachers and some parents who had read it to their class or children, found that kids loved it and thought it was funny. Is it our own mortality that sits closer to the surface as we age that makes us react strongly to this book? Or is it something else?
It's interesting that a children's book can cause this heated of a discussion and make us think in ways we didn't expect from a book aimed at a much younger audience.

Very cute story...except were there no consequences to the little fish’s theft before he hides in the seaweed?! Why not?!!
Haha! The end of the story is very funny.
I think this story would be good to talk to preschoolers about why it’s wrong to take something that belongs to another individual.

Caught at the BCinDC meet-up in Springfield today. Thanks "Spatial".
I read this cute little book on the spot but the words did not appeal to me that much, I was like meh.... However "Spatial" mentioned to observe the drawing of the eye on the big fish and I re-read the book looking at the pictures only and truly enjoyed it. It was a LOL for me then. And the moral of the story was not lost.
The story is in the eyes. The book does not even need words. The moral of the story is do not take things that do not belong to you.

I read this during last month's BCinDC meetup, and only just now, when I noticed it at the 2018 Day of the Book festival in Kensington, Maryland, did I recall that I'd never journaled it! I thought it was very clever. The artwork reminded me of Leo Lionni. I hope it was snapped up by someone who enjoys it!
