I got this softcover from an online seller. I've enjoyed Jansson's Moominland books, and was eager to read some of her other work. The book includes photographs on the cover and inside as well, illustrating the people and places that inspired the author.
Later: I really enjoyed this collection of stories and essays. Jansson's mix of the lyrical and the melancholy is entrancing, with notes of nostalgia, of humor, and reflections on youth and age. Tidbits from childhood like "The Dark" and "German Measles" convey scenes of her family life. "The Iceberg" and "The Boat and Me" struck me as inspirations for some of the Moomin settings and storylines.
"The Squirrel" is a story - in the third person, though it feels like a memoir - of a woman choosing to spend months alone on her island, and who gets caught up in the fate of a squirrel that got itself stranded there and is now inhabiting her woodpile. Funny and frustrating by turns.
"Letters from Klara" sketches the writer's personality and life via the letters she's written to a variety of people, from relatives to irate business acquaintances.
And more; an enjoyable collection!
