Just "discovered" Michael Connelly but not read any Harry Bosch, as yet anyway.......

Journal Entry 2 by wingPlum-crazywing at Brighouse, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Friday, September 21, 2018
Though I've read a couple if Connelly's books before this is the first Bosch book I've read. Overall I found this was a good story regarding an unsolved murder case Bosch can't let go of. When someone confesses to the crime, of course Bosch wants to be involved. However, the culprit isn't the one that Bosch always suspected & it follows the process him getting to grips with the "new" investigation.

In the early stages, maybe the first 100 or so pages, I found the writing style pretty ponderous. It was slow going at times & too heavy on all the forensic & technical details for my liking. I also found it a bit humorless, I like a bit of banter & joking to give a bit of levity midst the murder & mayhem. Anyway, I put it down for a day or two, read a fluffy feelgood tale & went back to it...

...& I'm glad I did as by part two "The Field Trip" it started to pickup for me. By part four there was no room for extraneous detail slowing things down as the feel needed to be one of events moving quickly to their conclusion.

A good read in the end & I'm glad I wasn't put off by my initial impressions. I don't feel though I've learnt anything of Bosch's personality other than he has a dogged determination & likes jazz. As it's book 12 in the series perhaps his characteristics & quirks (naw...he doesn't strike me as the quirky sort) have been previously well- established & don't need constantly reiterating. Bosch is a bit of an enigma to me & not one I'm sure I want to solve. I think I'll read more...watch this space.....
