I liked this. I initially gave it three stars, but the more I have sat with it the more I appreciated it. This is not a plot-driven book. The plot itself is very simple. Lucy Barton is in the hospital and her mother, whom she has a distant relationship with, takes her first airplane ride ever to come to sit by Lucy's bedside. Her mother talks idly, about nothing important on the surface, just gossip from home. Then her mother goes home. That's it. That's the plot. So the book is really about relationships and human interaction, which is something I tend to enjoy and Strout does that kind of thing really well.
