I found this in a Little Free Library at Mr. Jim’s Sub Shop in Chesapeake VA. The author gives his popular character, Alex Cross, the novel off. We instead get a story from Mississippi in the early 20th century involving one of Cross’s ancestors. It should go without saying what the crimes are when a black man is involved in a crime drama in that era in the south. Fortunately, there is plenty of drama and heroics in this fast-moving story surrounding such an unpleasant topic.
