Journal Entry 1 by wingULRKwing from București, Wallachia Romania on Saturday, January 20, 2018
We first met Flavia Albia, Falco's feisty adopted daughter, in The Ides of April. Albia is a remarkable woman in what is very much a man's world: young, widowed and fiercely independent, she lives alone on the Aventine Hill in Rome and makes a good living as a hired investigator. An outsider in more ways than one, Albia has unique insight into life in ancient Rome, and she puts it to good use going places no man could go, and asking questions no man could ask.

Even as the dust settles from her last case, Albia finds herself once again drawn into a web of lies and intrigue. Two mysterious deaths at a local villa may be murder and, as the household slaves are implicated, Albia is once again forced to involve herself. Her fight is not just for truth and justice, however; this time, she's also battling for the very lives of people who can't fight for themselves.

This has arrived safely in the Swiss Alps where it began snowing yesterday. I‘m slightly confused as this seems to be the second in the series? I guess I will sort it out later. Thanks so much for sending Cross-Patch, and thanks to ULRK for making this available so I can discover this author.

Journal Entry 7 by wingpenelopewanderswing at Hasliberg, Bern / Berne Switzerland on Thursday, December 3, 2020
Thanks to Cross-Patch, I realized I do indeed have the first in this series. I think when it arrived I had the impression I was at the end of a ray and put it in the „less urgent tbr“ pile. Is this correct or have I been unfairly holding it hostage since September??? Please let me know. At anyrate all the Lindsey Davis books just shifted over to the „hurry up TBR“ stack. Thanks for making these available (and please do let me know how urgent they are - I am meant to be moving out of my apartment by the end of the month and of course actually reading books rather than just boxing them is much more fun! Ooops, I meant, I need to be packing!)

Journal Entry 8 by wingpenelopewanderswing at Hasliberg, Bern / Berne Switzerland on Monday, April 12, 2021
Here as part of a bookcrossing spiral/ray, in which I am the happy last in line.
I greatly enjoyed this one, and am happy to know the next is on my TBR shelf. Flavia Albia is a complex and fascinating heroine, and this close view of Roman domesticity was intriguing.
I often wonder about how closely the order in series needs to be followed - in this case I expect it could be read without the first, but then the slow build with Tiberius would be lost.

This has shown the benefit of giving the second book in a series a go even if the first one didn’t excite you that much. I especially enjoyed the part where Flavia Albia was musing and drinking with the other women. It made her a lot more likeable than she was in book one. I was also intrigued by the murder of the slave because I couldn’t work out who had done it or why, but I had my suspicions. I did still have problems keeping track of all the Roman names but they will get more familiar.
