CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
sent to the winner or alibi of the Pirate Sweepstake last week
Thanks for the life's story of a real pirate queen!
I received this from bluezwuzl because it was on my wishlist - thank you!
I enjoyed it! I feel like I would have gotten more out of it if I knew more about the time period, because even though it's a fairly short/surface-level book, there are still a lot of references to people, places, and things that had me going "Wait, who was that again...?". But Cook does a good job trying to trace the history of a fascinating figure that we have frustratingly little primary source info on.
(Also, I have to take issue with some of the Goodreads reviews that claim it's "badly written/edited" with "lots of spelling and grammar mistakes" - no, it just has lots of historical quotations from a time before spelling was standardized!)

Bringing this along to the Boston Bookcrossers meeting this afternoon for trading. If no one takes it then it'll come back home with me.
I got this book at today's Meetup at the Porter Square Panera. (It was a lovely meetup, with some new faces as well as old friends; thanks to all! And it was great to finally meet you, Iddylu!) I'm always on the lookout for pirate-themed books for the annual Talk Like A Pirate Day release challenge, and this is one I hadn't read before. I see it's already racked up a lot of miles, too!
Later: Quite a story, with an impressive mix of historical detail from source documents and the often wildly-exaggerated myths that followed on. The facts (such as are known) are dramatic enough, showing a tough woman in a difficult situation who takes charge and does amazing things - though by the end of her life she seems to fade from the historical record. But she did indeed meet with Queen Elizabeth when both women were elderly and nearing the ends of their respective careers, and if the actual meeting was probably a lot more mundane (and brief) than the mythic one, the fact that it happened at all is pretty darned impressive.
