Garbology has a lot of interesting stuff about garbage, waste, trash. Humes goes into some of the history of how we have handled waste removal in the US, as well as current issues and some solutions including ways to reduce our own waste. On average each American produces 7.1 pounds of garbage a day.
The book was published in 2012 and so is not current on everything but I don't think much has changed. Here in the Portland area we are still sending at least 60 trucks a day on a 360 mile round trip to the Arlington land fill.
Humes story of plastic is truly scary. How we have gone from zero plastic to pieces of plastic mixed into the sand on every beach in the world in 60 years.
"It turns out our contemporary economy, not to mention the current incarnation of the American Dream is inextricably linked to an endless, accelerating accumulation of trash. The purchases that drive the markets, the products that prove the dream, all come packaged in instant trash (the boxes, wrappers, bags, ties, bottles caps and plastic bubbles that contain products). And what's inside that packaging is destined to break, become obsolete, get used up or become unfashionable in a few years, months or even days--in other words, rapidly becoming trash, too."
