Nathan Quinn is a biologist researching whale songs in Hawaii. One day, he saw a cryptic message on a whale's tail: BITE ME.

This book is both funny and serious. It makes you think about whales and their precarious situation, but it is also peppered with weird characters and ridiculous situations that make you laugh. Most of the time it's standard Moore, irreverent and witty. At times it reads like a mystery as we tried to figure out, along with the characters, who's sabotaging their research, or who Amy is. Once in a while it dibbles into sci-fi territory. Regardless, you're in for a good ride, not quite knowing what the turn around the corner may show. Moore's earlier books are a bit uneven, but this one is definitely one of the better ones.

I received this book today from Azuki, thank you very much! It really put a smile on my face, receiving a package from Hong Kong (and I could use that smile). Also thanks for the two extra surprises :) And for the very cool envelope. Wow, I see now that this book travelled for 2 months, I wonder how many places this book has seen.

I enjoyed this book. I think Azuki's message sums it up really well, but I'll try to put some of my thoughts about this book down here too.

First of all, I like whales. I enjoyed reading about whales, about researching whales (which seemed pretty legit to me, even though there's fiction in there as well), about the scenery/Hawaii etc. For a while the book is about that and a bit of a mystery/thriller and then it goes into scifi. I never could have made all those things up myself. And I couldn't predict everything either. I think this book, the fantasy world in it, is pretty unique.

I couldn't imagine everything, because it is so strange (such as how a whaleyboy would look if they made a movie), but I could understand and imagine most of it. I like how he made an explanation for everything. It's not random gibberish. And I like the ending and the notes about what is scientific and about protecting whales.

I also love how he describes the movements of the whales, you can really imagine seeing them yourself.
