What a delightful hoot, the rivalry between the Bow Street Runners and the Skillen brothers, plus their team of helpers, continues to amuse mightily. A rip-roaring pace, engaging characters and the highly appealing juxtapositioning here of friends and foes provides lively excitement. Marston’s continuation to the Bow Street Rivals tales following the pleasing first, SHADOW OF THE HANGMAN, proceeds in deadly style pitting the skills of the Skillen brothers against a particularly vindictive opponent. A well connected individual whose nefarious doings are screened from all scrutiny while he hides in plain sight using deviousness and sheer nerve.
The Skillen investigatory team consists of; the two Skillen twins Peter and Paul, Charlotte Skillen [Peters wife] she keeps their books both financial and detailed records, drawings and descriptions of individuals and gangs information of their know associates, Gully Ackford, owner and trainer at the Shooting Gallery, Jem Huckvale young apprentice to the team, and Paul makes use of the skills of disguise taught him by an actress. As ever the Bow Street Runners we are concerned with are one hasty and blustering Micah Yeomans, married to his work and proud of it and his more thoughtful and alert side-kick Alfred Hale, married to a sharply moral woman who keeps him well brushed and turned out. These two Principle Officers are answerable to Mr Eldon Kirkwood Esquire, the chief magistrate at Bow Street, a humourless workaholic with a mind like a steel trap, and little to offer his underlings but complaints and nothing much to recommend him in charm.
To finish as a pleasing flourish to events there is some agreeable movement in the relationship between Paul and his theatrical sweetheart, Hannah, and the adoration of the redoubtable Jem toward Meg, Charlotte’s maid is also rewarded by Meg’s return of interest. I’d be champing at the bit sooner for the next in series, book 3. DATE WITH THE EXECUTIONER (2017) if I didn’t have such teetering piles of books awaiting my attention. However, I can also see myself ferreting this out from the library in a fit of impatience before the year is out!
Well, I don’t need to pass this onto my brother-in-law as he has already read another copy, so I have a postal plan for this!
