I'm currently about half-way through this book, and I'm really enjoying it. I only bought it because the book club I was in printed a chapter/few paragraphs in some of their 'junk mail', so I bought it, and have never regretted it. I know it's part of a trilogy, and I already know I want the other books when they're available. It's one of those books where you feel you really know and identify with some of the characters.

The following is from the inside-cover of the book:

"In his black-walled fortress at Inuyama, the murderous warlord, Iida Sadamu, surveys his famous nightingale floor. Constructed with exquisite skill, it sings at the tread of each human foot. No assassin can cross it unheard.

Brought up in a remote mountain village amonth the Hidden, a reclusive and spiritual people, young Takeo knows only the ways of peace. But, unknown to himself, possesses the supernatural skills of the Tribe - pretenatural hearing, the ability to be in two places at once, invisibility. When his life is saved by the mysterious Lort Otori Shigeru, Takeo begins the journey that will lead him to his hidden destiny within the walls of Inuyama. It is a journey of revenge and treahery, honour and loyalty, beauty and magic, and the overwhelming passion of love."

"Across The Nightingale Floor is a stunningly powerful story, a rare work of fiction that appeals equally to young readers and adults. Epic in its scope, brilliant in it's imaginitive vision, the mythical world of the Otori is unforgettable".

Well, I've finally finished this book, and have to say I LOVED IT! I got completely engrossed, and has certainly re-introduced me to how involved you can get with a good book.

Last night I sat down for '5 minutes' and ended up reading the last half-dozen or so chapters, as I knew it was near the end, and I wasn't going to put it down till I'd finished ;o)

I thought the characters were well defined, and I got quite attached to the main characters, especially Takeo, who I had a genuine concern for, as the book reached towards the end. The brilliant writing actually made me worry for what may happen to him, I worried for his welfare (Eek! Does that sound wimpish???).

Anyway, I loved this book, and I'm looking forward to getting hold of the 2nd book in the trilogy to see where it goes now.

I have an idea of the direction of the 2nd book, but, just like the last chapters of this book, it will probably go in a direction that I had no idea of. Which is good ;o)
