For many today the dolphin is a symbol of hope. The effect of dolphins on the emotional well-being of humans also has a long history. In ancient times the Greeks placed the figure of a dolphin with the words "Know Thyself" at the entrance to the oracle in Delphi and for centuries dolphins have played an imortant role in Australian Aboriginal culture. Now the use of dolphins in childbirth and to alleviate mental stress is a medical fact, and no-one has done more to establish the clinical evidence than Dr Horace Dobbs.
In this book he enlarges on his "Operation Sunflower" experiment (the subject of 2 TV films) and explores the interaction between dolphins and humans in encounters off the Northumberland coast with the hermit dolphin Freddie, in Western Australia where increading numbers of dolphins are coming inshore to sport with divers and even paddling children, and with the Caribbean dolphin JoJo who seems capable of some sort of telepathic powers. No-one knows for certain if healing derives from the dolphin´s echo sounding system or the bio-electrical energy field it sets up, or merely from the playful and caring disposition it displays - or perhaps all three. But Dr Dobbs is given an altogether new perspective on dolphin therapy when he meets the Japanese healer Professor Nakagawa and swims in the sea off the Great Barrier Reef with a humpback whale the size of a submarine.

Horace Dobbs is the founder of the "International Dolphin Watch":
