From the cover-backside "In the summer of 1956, Stevens, the ageing butler of Darlington Hall, embarks on a leisurely holiday that will take him deep into the countryside and into his past . . .
A contemporary classic, The Remains of the Day is Kazuo Ishiguro's beautiful and haunting evocation of life between the wars in a Great English House, of lost causes and lost love."

Such an overwhelming package of everything, thank you!! I left the task of photography to my husband and he spent quite a while arranging the contents so that everything fits in :D I can't wait to open the mystery can to see what's inside, and Knusper Zimt will surely be the first chocolate that I take a bite of. This book I've read before, so I think it'll continue its travels with me to Bordeaux Convention next...

The butler who is narrating this story as a series of flashbacks while travelling to meet an old colleague has a very narrow view of life. He is constantly reflecting on the meaning of the word dignity in relation to himself and his profession. His attempt to meet his own definition makes him focus entirely on serving his employer while not having any time for the people he works with. It makes him a sad character who does not know how to interact with other people in a one to one basis - witness his attempts to be witty.
