This is not an ordinary book: it's a BookCrossing book! BookCrossing books are world travelers - they like to have adventures and make new friends...and every once in a while they even write home to say what they've been doing.

This book follows the story of two girls from different ethnic/religious minorities during the turbulent 1980s in Ethiopia. Rahel is Beta-Israel and her people's hope has always been to someday go to Jerusalem. Sahay is one of the Kemant people, and while she is not part of the ruling Amhara ethnic group, she too has been brought up to fear the people she knows as falasha, or "alien strangers". When famine and unrest in the north send both girls fleeing for Sudan, they must learn to trust each other in order to survive.

I find the story of the Beta-Israel fascinating: I vaguely remember hearing something about it at the time, but I wasn't really paying much attention to the news then and didn't realize that Israel had actually organized rescue flights for the refugee Ethiopian Jews in the 1980s. I wish there was more information available about Sahay's people as well - they sound quite interesting.

Picked up at the Tenrikyo bazaar.
