FOL book sale purchase. Alton is recruited to assist his great-uncle, Lester Trapp, who has recently lost his eyesight due to complications of diabetes. Officially, he is to drive him to his bridge matches and turn the cards for him. Unofficially, his parents want him to ingratiate himself because Lester is rich. Alton gets to know his uncle, the game, and a mystery in the past.
Good story, and I learned a bit about bridge, which seems like a more complicated game than I'd care to learn. (Author invites readers to skip the detailed bridge descriptions by marking them with a picture of a whale, likening them to the extended whaling passages in Moby Dick that are unnecessary to understanding the plot.) This is a case of the book designer or marketing team missing the boat. "A novel about a King, a Queen, and a Joker," the cover proclaims. What?! No joker in bridge, and no joker in the story. I'd even accept a "wild card" metaphor, but joker seems out of place.
