When this book arrived and I took it home, I hopefully showed it to Cassey. She has gotten to the point where she only reads now when she has nothing else to do, and it is very hard for me to find books for her because she is so picky about what she reads. But this book intrigued her and she began reading it that night and finished it last night. She said it was really good, and would have told me more about it except I plan to read it myself! And she wanted us to keep it since it is autographed, but when I told her it came from a BookCrosser she said okay. So I am doubly grateful to Leighspeak, first for sending me the book for myself to read, and second for sending a book that Cassey enjoyed!

Update: Since we now have Leighspeak's blessing and permission to keep this book, I'm marking it as PC so that Cassey can hang onto it for awhile!

When we moved this summer and the girls cleared out some stuff, Cassey gave this book back to me. I finished reading it a couple of nights ago and wow, what an awesome story! It was very gripping, and I liked the way the narration went back and forth between the two main characters. I'm gonna look for the sequel now!

I'll either check wish lists or offer this in the forums! Thanks again HoledEnglish (looks like we've both changed our screen names!).

Edited: I've posted this on bookrelay.com!

Sorry it's taken me so long to get round to this- as I said before I was waiting to get Knife Edge and Checkmate. I think this book is probably the finest of the trilogy, and definitely does well as a stand alone, which was what I though it was when I read it years ago. Moving, powerful and well written. One of those "teen books" everyone should read.

Very, very enjoyable and deals with some fairly serious issues in a sensitive and readable way, without overpowering the story by being overtly a "message book". I would recommend this to anyone, or their children, as something they really ought to read at some point.

reserved for bigcurlyloz to wrap up and post onwards

Couldn't put this book down, I loved it. The characters of Callum and Sephy drew me in instantly and it was definitely a gripping story. Different to things I have read previously and I can't wait to read Knife Edge to find out how the story progresses. Thanks for the trade, the book is now reserved for a non-bookcrosser.

Edit - The non-bookcrosser enjoyed the book, but not quite as much as I did =)

I'm very interested in the history of the American civil rights movement so it was impossible not to see the references to it throughout this book. For me that sometimes meant being jolted out of the narrative and thrown into a real historical situation, but overall it added to the novel, and gave it extra resonance. I imagine it would be good for teenagers to compare the real life and fictional events.

Blackman's writing style is engaging and the plot twisted in some ways I didn't expect. A good read.

I've now given this copy to a colleague at work who is already halfway through and liking it a lot. I believe she will pass it on to someone else afterwards, but may not choose to journal it herself.
