From the back: In this highly accomplished frist novel, Olu Ibukun describes the initial impact of Christianity on Yoruba society, giving his readers a graphic illustration of the struggle between old Africa and the forces of Western civilisation.
Ebu Odanogun, the hero of the novel, is a favoured descendant of powerful warrior chiefs, and is therefore destined for a position of leadership in his village society. But he is also the son of one of the first Christian converts among a superstitious and taboo-ridden people. Torn between two apparently irreconcilable worlds Odanogun finds, after years of agonising decisions and indecisions, that a synthesis is possible, and that one can assimilate the white man's education and culture and still enjoy what is unique in Africa's living heritage.
