Pop Goes the Murder
3 journalers for this copy...
I am always amazed at the many types of cozy mysteries. This one is a popcorn shop mystery. Is there anything left that doesn't have a series of cozy mystery about it? Pretty sure there's a janitor series and a plumber series too... Anyway, I picked this one for my birthday partner because it has a dog on the cover and it's a very new book, so hopefully she hasn't read it yet.
Rebecca Anderson is determined to make her new popcorn shop business a success. Her ex-husband, Chef Antoine Belanger, invites her on his television show and Rebecca wants the prime exposure. While in town to film the episode, Antoine's main assistant, Melanie, is electrocuted in her hotel room tub. Rebecca's best friend/brother-in-law, Sheriff Dan Cooper, must determine if the death is suicide or foul play.
Sending this as a belated birthday present to a very nice BCer. Sorry for the delay, blame in on hurricane Irma and the cold I've been passing back and forth with my husband...

Love the dog BCID bookplate on this one. And the cover art makes me smile. I envision myself eating popcorn when I read this one. Thank you! :)
I liked this story more than I thought I would. The main character was likable even though she missed some major clues on the identity of the murderer which I thought were obvious. And I guess that would be my only complaint about this book - I knew who the murderer was at the halfway point and then had to wait for our heroine to figure it out. Contains two decadent-sounding popcorn recipes at the back of the book.
This is going into a box for bookpatch - not sure exactly when it will be mailed, so may be in travelling status for a while.
Thank you for sending this book! Read Azuki's JE and had to laugh, that was my first thought too--is there anything left that doesn't have a cozy mystery series about it now? :-D And yes, the popcorn recipes do look decadent! -- the Mexican Chocolate one may make it on to my to-do list.
My favorite character in this book was probably the dog--main character Rebecca and I just didn't hit it off for some reason, unfortunately. Also, I realize that to really enjoy certain stories, you have to be able to suspend reality to one degree or another, but throughout the book I was distracted wondering how one could really make a living running a popcorn shop in a small town--especially when it's not tourist season. Just how much is she charging for a cup of coffee? And although I usually never see it coming, I too was able to guess the murderer this time. So, while it was a nice light read, I probably won't be back for more of this series.
Regarding the recipes, the coco-puff fudge is mentioned so frequently I expected that to be included but it wasn't--guessing it probably was in the first book of the series. Looked it up online and it is basically coco puff cereal suspended in fudge, which sounds horribly junky but I bet I would like :-)
Both of the popcorn recipes sounded good. Decided to try the Low-Calorie Mexican Chocolate Popcorn (as I really don't need to be snacking on the pound of bacon called for in the Bacon Pecan Popcorn-- although again, I bet I would like it :-)) The Mexican popcorn was interesting; I held back a little on the cayenne but it was still spicy and sweet.
