(15/10/17) Subtitled, 'The Geography We've Lost and How to Find It' is Somerville's attempt to make geography (and a bit of geology) interesting, and to fill in the gaps from his lost education. I however was paying attention at school and continue to enjoy travelling and gathering facts AND experiences...the key to a lot of learning success. This is fun, but will probably not convert anyone, who doesn't already 'get' it. That said I like his informative and informal writing style and useful maps and diagrams :)

A couple of things of note, I like the CRCS (County of Rutland Comparison Scale), an unofficial guide to the size of things measured as multiples of Rutland, England's smallest county. For example Lough Neagh in Northern Island is x1 CRCS and the Trent and Ouse in Yorkshire combine to drain x40 CRCS into the River Humber. And, now that I am living in Wales I would like to point out that the handy 'Never Eat...' mnemonic doesn't work in Welsh, which is unfortunate for native speakers who would need to do something with GDDG!

One of several books gleaned from the book buffet to send up North to the Isle of Lewis for releases around the theme of the sea, nature, countryside etc.

Received this book within a lovely, themed RABCK parcel from WillCaxton - thank you very much! So sorry about the delay in journalling.

The book is subtitled: The Geography We've Lost and How to Find It. The Outer Hebrides starts on page 137.

I'll be reading over the winter (hopefully) and releasing in the spring (definitely) once The Season begins.

BookGroupMan... were you having a Groundhog day there? ;)

I started this book but agree completely with BookGroupMan's first paragraph. It's not a bad book at all - but not sure who fits the target audience.

There is one whole paragraph on Lewis & Harris. And a bigger paragraph on St Kilda!

Released 4 yrs ago (6/4/2019 UTC) at Rubha Buaile Linnis in Isle of Lewis, Scotland United Kingdom

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Left tucked into the cairn on a beautiful sunny but breezy afternoon. The cairn is on a headland south of the Uig road end, just past the slipway. It was a lovely day for a walk (unlike in the photo!) with views of Hushinish jetty, and the islands of Harris, Scarp and Mealista.

Looks like something about this book is offputting... it had been moved at least a couple of times, but not taken. And, curiously, when I checked today, there was a £1 coin in the bag!

Thank you very much, anonymous donor, I shall donate the money to Bethesda Hospice, in Stornoway.

Released 4 yrs ago (6/17/2019 UTC) at Mealasta Information Stones in Isle of Lewis, Scotland United Kingdom

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Left at the BookCrossing Stones on sunny spells kind of morning.
