I have read and enjoyed two of Parkhurst's other novels, Lost and Found and The Dogs of Babel. I'm glad I read this book of hers also, although I liked it slightly less than the other two.
I appreciated the empathy and bravery with which the author wrote. I thought she made some bold choices, such as using second person narration in the chapters told from the mother's point of view. I also liked the way she enabled us as readers to really come to understand the plight of this family and their motivations.
I found the ending a bit unsatisfying and overall it did not have quite the same enjoyment factor for me as her other two books, but it was definitely a solid read.

Reserving for the General Literature VBB.
Description from Amazon:
"How far will a mother go to save her family? The Hammond family is living in DC, where everything seems to be going just fine, until it becomes clear that the oldest daughter, Tilly, is developing abnormally -- a mix of off-the-charts genius and social incompetence. Once Tilly -- whose condition is deemed undiagnosable -- is kicked out of the last school in the area, her mother Alexandra is out of ideas.
The family turns to Camp Harmony and the wisdom of child behavior guru Scott Bean for a solution. But what they discover in the woods of New Hampshire will push them to the very limit. Told from the alternating perspectives of both Alexandra and her younger daughter Iris (the book's Nick Carraway), this is an unputdownable story about the strength of love, the bonds of family, and how you survive the unthinkable."

This wasn't what I expecting but I did find the book hard to put down. This book dealt with living with a child on the autism spectrum and how a family was drawn into a cult-like situation.

Thank you for sharing this book with me!!
A truly good read. A story of a family with two daughters. The oldest is smart but has been to every school in the district, the schools are at a loss as to how to handle her. She is on the autism spectrum. The younger daughter and the mother are the voices telling this family story as it searches for harmony.
An enjoyable fast read.
