From the cover: "When two young girls go missing in rural Herefordshire, police constable and wizard-in-training Peter Grant is sent out of London to check that nothing supernatural is involved. It's purely routine, Nightingale thinks he'll be done in less than a day.
But Peter's never been one to walk away from someone in trouble, so when nothing overtly magical turns up he volunteers his services to the local police who need all the help they can get.
But because the universe likes a joke as much as the next sadistic megalomaniac, Peter soon comes to realise that dark secrets underlay the picturesque fields and villages of the countryside and there might just be work for Britain's most junior wizard after all.
Soon he's in a vicious race against time in a world where the boundaries between reality and fairy have never been less clear..."

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I'm not quite sure I properly understood everything that was going on in there, but I still had a tremendous time reading this book. Lots of fun, lots of mystery, and I appreciated having a bit more of background on a lot of things, and discovering new aspects of magic in that world.

Thanks for the book and the postcard, BaiLong!

"I sighed--policing would be so much easier if people didn't have concerned relatives. The murder rate would be much lower, for one thing."

You can take City PC out of the city but you can't take city out of the City PC. Peter Grant goes rural, and he's out of his comfort zone. Herefordshire isn't London but there is something magical involved in the case of two missing girls. Away from the Folly, Peter needs to call a certain river goddess for help which leads to hot situations in strange places...

I really liked this fifth volume, even though it didn't set in London - or maybe that's the reason? ;)

This (number 5 in the series) has come in with the 4th, and I hope to get to them soon although there seem to be a few other rings and rays here at the moment. I do have my own (as yet unread) copy of the Hanging Tree, so don’t need that one, but if 5.5 is available I’m in. Thanks so much for making these available and sending. All the best to you all!

Journal Entry 12 by wingpenelopewanderswing at Hasliberg, Bern / Berne Switzerland on Thursday, April 9, 2020
I love this series, which I'm reading as a bookcrossing spiral... I have already given the box set to my two children who live abroad - I've had one sent to London (which I thought was particularly apropos, as she's relatively new to the city) and the other to Brooklyn... Aside from the intriguing approach to magic, Peter Grant is a brilliant beta hero. This one provided an interesting jaunt out of the city, with lots of Bev, which is always nice. I was a bit disappointed that Mellisa didn't come more to the fore, but at any rate it was a great read. Thank so very much for making this spiral available, and thanks for sending Mecu... Can't wait for the next! (I have a copy of Hanging Tree, so you need not send that one).
I'm not sure how soon I'll be able to get these posted, especially as I discovered that the post office doesn't accept parcels to all countries right now. My local post office shut a year ago, so we also have to wait for an urgent need to go to town before we are even near a post office!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I took advantage of a trip to the supermarket in town to go to a post office. I usually try to send books from France as they have a very good book rate, but given the lock-down I don't know how long it will be and I feel guilty watching the books to send pile up.
So this now leaves Switzerland and heads to Ireland. Thanks so much for making this series available, Lamilla.
Stay well and healthy everyone!

This was a fun and entertaining read, and in my opinion the best yet in the series. I've enjoyed it, even went to bed a bit later than I had planned. I've enjoyed Peter and Beverley together. This will soon move on to Canada.

Edit: the cover is letting go, so I'm going to use some tape to keep it together.

I really enjoyed this one. The story takes place away from the familiar locale and the Folly, and the Nightingale is showing up even less than he usually does. The story remains a lot of fun to read. So glad I signed up for this spiral.
