Just discovered that the author wrote the Heartbeat books under the name Nicholas Rhea
That was was an interesting read Kirjakko and not THAT gruesome, well mostly not anyway. Did you know that the author wrote the Constable stories which became the Heartbeat series.

Picked up at the April York Bookcrossing meetup. Looks fascinating!
I'm afraid I really didn't get on with this book: every chapter started with a lengthy description of the area, and the stories felt very dry and plodding.
