I was surprised to find that Sandi Toksvig writes serious fiction but was also impressed with her ability to evoke the late Victorian era and the horrors of the Boer War so effectively. She is especially good at dialogue, and this is where her roots as a humourist are most evident. There are, however, parts of this that are rushed, as if too much has been crammed in to be dealt with properly. Still a very enjoyable read.

We enjoyed a trip into York to enjoy the Christmas lights and decorations this afternoon and I took the opportunity to swap a couple of BookCrossing books at the same time!
I chose this because I vaguely remember reading Whistling for the Elephants by this author - many years ago now . . . .

The story of Valentine Grey who went off to fight in the Boer War - and her cousin Reggie who didn't. Well written with some interesting depictions of the horrors of war and concentration camps . . . .
