![]() ![]() From a rummage sale at Koganji Temple; larger photo here. A novel in free verse about a subject I didn't know anything about: the evacuation of the Aleutian Islands during WWII. Even for the islanders who were evacuated by the US government (as opposed to being taken prisoner by the Japanese) many of them lost their possessions, significant elements of their culture, and even their lives. The conditions in their camps were terrible, and many islanders never returned to their home villages; either they didn't survive, they moved to town, or in some cases they weren't allowed to go home; some villages simply ceased to exist. Vera's story is a fictional look at a heartbreaking episode in Alaska's history. Themes for Secretariat's 2017 Never Judge a Book By Its Cover Challenge (3rd quarter): Week 29: author names beginning with J, K, L, or M Week 32: children on cover Week 33: script in title |
