Jack is five. He lives with his Ma.
They live in a single, locked room.
They don't have the key.
Jack and Ma are prisoners.

Oh what can I say about this book? I bought it in a charity for 50p as I thought it would save for either the August One Word Challenge or the September Sapphire" Challenge - I didn't intend reading it as I'd heard about it on Channel 4's "Book Club" & didn't think it was my cup of tea. How wrong I was!

The back cover blurb is so right...this book will break your heart...haunting & compelling....utterly gripping. There's a quote from Audrey Niffenegger that sums it up perfectly "ROOM is a book to read in one sitting. When it's over you look up: the world looks the same but you are somehow different & that feeling lingers for days"

The book is written from the perspective of a five year-old & it's clever the way you see the story through his eyes & yet at the same time as an adult you can see what Jack is missing, what in his innocence he doesn't understand. For me the balance between life in "Room" & life on the "Outside" (oops..hope I've not spoilt anything there) is just right, it would have been so easy for either part to go on too long. After finishing the book I did find myself looking at everyday things, things we take for granted & wondering what it would be like to be discovering them for the first time like Jack.

It's a difficult book to journal as there is so much that could be discussed - basically I think it's a book you HAVE to read for yourself...hope you enjoy it as much as I did :o)
