I found this 1967 copy of Atlanta's novel, GONE WITH THE WIND, some time ago at a thrift shop. It was in need of care after being abandoned for sometime in a place like an attic or a basement. I disinfected it and put on a new cover (see picture.) Stains are apparent on the paper edges of the 1037 page book but they are harmless, just stains. GONE WITH THE WIND was wildly popular early in the 20th Century as it came out in the midst of two World Wars. The War Between the States that it describes was the first Modern war and Margaret Mitchell wrote in a time when she could still gather the tales of what happened then here in Georgia from actual survivors of the conflict. It was tragic all around. Notably, the Federal Government terrorized the civilian population of Atlanta and surrounding areas. I read this novel long ago but it is vivid in my memory. Scarlett, the heroine, is compelling, a mistress of survival. Yet, she carries a long and unrequited love for Ashley Wilkes, even marrying his fiancee's brother so she can be his sister-in-law. Her use of Ashley's wife Melanie, I remember, was one of the most incriminating aspects of Scarlett's story. To Scarlett's credit, she did express guilt from time to time. Melanie, married to the man she coveted, managed to make their relationship hard for Scarlett by sincerely loving her like a sister and giving her much more credit than she deserved for rescuing her from the burning of Atlanta. Though this is a good reading copy, I have decided to surrender it in bookcrossing. I hope this GONE WITH THE WIND will reach an interested reader and that the story of Atlanta in the WAR will be treated with the respect it deserves. This particular copy is the 77th printing of this 1936 book. Eighty-one years after its publication, GONE WITH THE WIND remains a steady seller. The book label features my photo of Georgia artist Steffen Thomas' TRILON, which is at an intersection of Peachtree and 15th Streets near the High Museum and Colony Square. A native of Fürth, Germany, Thomas was of Welch and German ancestry. He first made his home here in Georgia back in the 1930s and married Sara Douglass, a Southern lady from a prominent Atlanta family, in 1933. Sara became his lifelong muse. They raised four children in Stone Mountain, Georgia, near his studio. Trilon honors the Southern Woman.
