COVER:
"When a colleague extends his summer vacation, Inspector Salvo Montalbano is forced to stay in Vigàta and endure the August heat. Montalbano's long-suffering girlfriend, Livia, joins him with a friend - husband and young son in tow - to keep her company during these dog days of summer. But when the boy suddenly disappears into a narrow shaft hidden under the family's beach rental, Montalbano, in pursuit of the child, uncovers something terribly sinister. As the inspector spends the summer trying to solve this perplexing case, Livia refuses to answer his calls - and Montalbano is left to take a plunge that will affect the rest of his life. Fans of the Sicilian inspector as well as readers new to this increasingly popular series will enjoy following the melancholy but unflinchingly moral Montalbano as he undertakes one of the most shocking investigations of his career".

Oh dear, I read this so long ago that I have forgotten when! My fault for forgetting to register at the time, sorry. However, I do remember the story! so it must have been a memorable enough one.

The corruptions of the planning system in Sicily as well as the influence of money and Mafia connections are explored within this book and the outcome - though not as one may have expected - is a great solution.

Sent to my sister for further distribution.

What a cracker, a brilliant inclusion in the oh-so-very-readable Montalbano series by the insightful Camilleri. I'll nip back in time to add my reading notes, meanwhile this evening AUGUST HEAT is heading onto the new BookCrossing shelf at the Filmhouse, Lothian Road, Edinburgh.

My last WILD RELEASE NOTES: (5/4/2017) for the copy of l this I actually read:
Deceptively light touch as ever to Camilleri’s slow burn tale in times of high heat. It’s so hot in fact that the scorching heat almost becomes a character in its own right it certainly impacts on the land round the holiday villa and more significantly on poor Montalbano’s mind.

Lots going on here, investigation into the murder of a young girl, investigation into the shady business practices on a local builder, forays into local politics, estrangement from Livia when she leaves abruptly with her friends after the discovery of the corpse in the trunk, the distraction of a beautiful young girl who is tied to Montalbano’s investigations and exerts a strong fascination over him… reflections on aging and the fact that the culmination of this investigation is particularly shattering for Montalbano.

It’s a splendid plot even if I did doubt its veracity and think at the very least Montalbano’s career would be over after this debacle, undoubtedly great reading though. I’ve just come across a description of “melancholy but unflinchingly moral” for Montalbano, must agree, neatly put. I really enjoyed that the descriptions of the heat and its effects are wonderfully vivid. Perhaps book to read in the midst of winter to remind oneself it will get warm again.

Appreciate this quote from page 116:
“Then he sat outside till eleven o’clock, reading a good detective novel by two Swedish authors, husband and wife, in which there wasn’t a page without a ferocious and justified attack on social democracy and the government. In his mind Montalbano dedicated the book to all those who did not deign to read mystery novels because, in their opinion, they were only entertaining puzzles.”
