The story revolves around Clay, who finds a box of cassette tapes waiting on his doorstep. As he listens to them, he is drawn into the story of Hannah on whom he had a crush. She committed suicide just a couple weeks earlier. The tapes share the thirteen reasons why she made the choice. There is one tape for each person that contributed to that decision.

On the surface, it sounds like a horrifying premise for a read. It is a tough read at times; I could not read this straight through. I could only read a chapter or two at a time. The point of the book is that how we act toward one another, whether deliberate or not, makes a difference. Any one of those acts can be small (though some are NOT) , but they can add up to push a person over the edge or save them.
I am not sure if this should be a teen book or. I don't want to put ideas into young minds or glorify suicide in any way. I work with teens, I can see this putting the suggestions into their minds, and they making a video, etc. listing their reason(s). I know teens who tried this route, but, thankfully, failed. Teens are very impressionable. This topic, though, needs to be discussed with teens to help them to make better choices. I believe that adults who work with teens would benefit from reading this book. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Suicide passes the pain from the individual who dies, to those who are left living.

I was drawn into the characters and the story. I thought the characters believable. Because of my work and contact with teens who tried to commit suicide or considered it, in my opinion, the book is impactful, but FOR ADULTS.

Thank you so much J4shaw for this unexpected RABCK.

After I watched the Netflix show, I really wanted to read the book. I liked the show but didn't think it was as good or shocking as everyone made out and I've still not watched the second season. But the rule of thumb is that books are normally far superior to their on screen counterparts and I'm excited to give this a read.
