I bought this book at a used bookstore I like (Second Look Books) in my neighbouring city of Kitchener, ON. I was there looking for a particular book about Canadian "Bomber Boys" during the Second World War, and I didn't find it... but I did find this one! Actually, my husband found it, but either way we ended up buying it and bringing it home to Cambridge with us, not knowing much about it aside from that it was a memoir of someone who served on a Lancaster bomber during WWII. I can see that the book was originally sold in Cambridge (it still has part of a Book Express pricetag on the back), so this won't be a new stop on its journey, but that's where it is for now!

In celebration of the sesquicentennial, I have dedicated my bookcrossing activity to the reading and sharing of Canadian stories. I have decided to include this book in my Canada 150 project.

This book was an emotional read, of course, but I am glad to have read it.

As it turns out, this book was written by a local author and it's about a man from what is now Cambridge-- not even just from Cambridge, but from the part of town where we live (Preston). I don't know where exactly the man in the book lived (it doesn't list his address) but he went to the same high school as my parents, and the same grade school that my best friend's daughter attends (which is just a couple of blocks down the street from our house), and his church is on the street immediately parallel to mine. It was weird but interesting to read this kind of a story and know that the Quiet Hero himself would have roamed these same streets and seen a lot of the same places that I see every day... that the neighbourhood map of his day-to-day life (in peacetime) would so overlap my own.

I used to be very involved in theatre in Cambridge, having performed in and worked on community productions but also having taught/run classes in the community. This weekend I am going to Millbrook, ON to see a former student-turned-employee/friend in the World Premiere run of a Canadian play about the Bomber Command called Bombers: Reaping the Whirlwind. I'm really excited to see this production and I intend to leave this book somewhere around Fourth Line Theatre when I do!
