Picked this up off the free shelf at an Arlington library (a few counties away from me).

I read a copy in 2009 and had this to say at the time:
The final chapter in the Rainbow trilogy, this book finds the boys taking a cross-county trip together.

Once again, the characters and people they meet are transparent examples of various types encountered in the gay community (a transgendered character, an old gay couple in a longterm relationship, a little boy with an abusive father, a group at a radical fairy gathering, etc.) and that was a little annoying since you could see the ending coming a mile away once you realized that. But that wasn't enough to keep me from finding out what happened to the boys!

Their trip is full of realistically painful mistakes and arguments (you try spending every second of the day with people you've never spent that much time with before and see if fights don't break out!) and many times over the characters were in conflict with each other and themselves. But the conflicts brought them together as much as tore them apart. I broke out into a wide grin when Jason called Nelson his best friend. And there were plenty of amazing moments throughout that made me smile as well.

Also, I got to the part in the book about Carlsbad Caverns just as a friend/local BookCrosser visited Carlsbad Caverns in real life. Neat coincidence. I've visited a few of the places mentioned in the book when I went cross-country but I took middle or northern routes most of the time so it was neat to see where their journey took them.

The ending made me happy and satisfied, and I felt glad to have taken this three-book journey with these characters.

I'm claiming this from the bookbox. I enjoyed Rainbow Boys and Rainbow High, and am glad of a chance to finish the trilogy!

Later: This is a breezy conclusion to the trilogy, and if at times the just-out-of-high-school trio seem to act like middle-school kids, well, I could cope with that. The premise puts the guys on a road trip to Los Angeles, where Jason has been asked to give a speech at the opening of a new LGBT high school in LA. The guys had planned a camping trip before starting college, but the speech conflicts - so they decide to drive west together. Along the way they meet a variety of characters and situations, some of which demonstrate that Jason still has a long way to go regarding accepting the "different", be it transgender, the aged, or just Nelson {wry grin}.

There are some ups and downs along the way, with Kyle and Jason demonstrating the wrong ways to have arguments (they get better), and with Nelson angsting over being a third wheel, nobody-will-ever-love-him kind of guy, while Jason gets all the attention (spoiler: he gets better too). Fairly lightweight, storywise, but it has a nice resolution to this stage in the lives of our trio.

[There's a short TV Tropes page on the trilogy.]
