From Goodreads:
Andreas lives his whole life in the Austrian Alps, where he arrives as a young boy taken in by a farming family. He is a man of very few words and so, when he falls in love with Marie, he doesn't ask for her hand in marriage, but instead has some of his friends light her name at dusk across the mountain. When Marie dies in an avalanche, pregnant with their first child, Andreas' heart is broken. He leaves his valley just once more, to fight in WWII - where he is taken prisoner in the Caucasus - and returns to find that modernity has reached his remote haven...

Read and enjoyed, but this is my 'read' and return choice for this bookbox and so it remains in the Read it, Swap it , Leave it bookbox.

A deceptively simple but multi layered tale of a real 'man of the mountains'. This was a joy to read and an antidote to my more usual cynical murder genres! The beauty of the natural world in which this is set and the language used throughout has a quiet clarity not often encountered. I really liked this and will remember it for a while I think!

Hope the next reader enjoys it too!

This was a simple and quick read, an insight into a life completely different from my own. I really loved the descriptions of the mountains and outdoor life, and found the book to be very touching.

A short book, which manages to fit within its 150 pages the titular 'Whole Life' - and a life with more than its fair share of events and heartbreak. It was sad, but it wasn't depressing. It's told with subtlety and spareness, portraying appalling events with a surprisingly effective detachment. I particularly enjoyed the evocation of the Alpine landscape, and the relationship between humans and mountains.

Travelling in the book box "Read It, Swap It, Leave It"

This book came in a mystery book bag. Select three: read one and return to bag, take one and swap it for one on mount tobie, leave number three in the bag.
This book is a really gentle read, I read it in a day. I do wonder if all of chose this as our read and replace a book because it looked a quick read.... which it was and although it wasn't a challenging read it was enjoyable.
Describing a life as we probably do our own not overly stressing the good or bad. Made me think how I would describe my life.

Received when my "Read It, swap It, Leave It" bookring arrived home. Will make my decisions on what I'm reading, swapping or leaving at a later date & then set up round :o)

Journal Entry 15 by wingPlum-crazywing at Brighouse, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Monday, March 8, 2021
For a short book this certainly packs a punch. It's simply the story of a man's life, which to me was a sad, solitary, melancholy one & not without cruelty & heartbreak. Yet there's never a sense that Egger's is disappointed with his lot, he accepts his life & gets on & makes the best of it.

It's beautifully & eloquently written. In the opening pages of the book death is described as the Cold Lady:
"The Cold Lady comes and takes and goes. That's all. She seizes you as she passes and takes you with her and sticks you in some hole. And in the last patch of sky you see before they finally shovel the earth in over you she reappears and breathes on you. And all that's left for you then is darkness. And the cold."
- made me shiver!

This isn't not a book I would've have picked up myself so thanks for adding it to the "Read It, Swap It, Leave It" ring. It will be travelling on soon as part of the next round.

Picked this out of the Read It, Swap It, Leave It Bookring - Round 3.

I'll be reading this one and will be back with my review later.

The description of the location of the story is what drew me to reading this book. The story was quick and not too dark but not a lot of light in the story either. Not really my kind of story but at least it gave me a chance to read a new author.

This book will now return to the Read It, Swap It, Leave It parcel, I just have to read one of my TBR books to replace with the book I swapped and then it can continue its travels.

Received with Plum-crazy's " Read it, swap it, leave it" book box and seems I'm the one deciding to keep ( swap) it. It was a tough decision between this one and the other one I decided to read instead.
Looking forward to reading " A whole life" at my leisure though as it seems to have been well received by so many
